Job Description:

Fitters are a vital part of our fabrication and manufacturing teams, responsible for assembling the steel structures that shape our projects. From reading detailed blueprints to executing precise fit-ups, this role directly impacts quality and productivity on the shop floor. Whether you’re beginning your career or advancing to more technical work, you’ll have opportunities to grow your skill set and take on greater responsibility. Fitters at RK are known for their attention to detail, craftsmanship, and ability to deliver with accuracy and consistency. Your work will help set the pace for our shop teams and ensure our projects are built right from the start, on time, on spec, and up to our industry-leading standards. Performs the full range of fitting and fabrication duties, including layout, positioning, and assembly of metal components according to prints, drawings, and specifications. Fitters operate equipment such as forklifts and overhead cranes, ensure quality control through precise measurements, and contribute to both standard and complex metal builds in the shop environment. This position is classified into Fitter 1, Fitter 2, or Fitter 3 based on demonstrated experience, independence, and skill level.

Job Responsibility:

  • Operate forklifts and overhead cranes
  • Read and use a tape measure accurately
  • Perform layout and fit-up of metal components per drawings and cut lists
  • Pass welding tests: 3G/FCAW, 1G/GMAW-MC, and 3G/GMAW-SC
  • Produce high-quality assemblies aligned with specifications
  • Inspect finished work and make necessary adjustments
  • Identify and resolve fitting issues during fabrication
  • Collaborate with teammates to meet production goals
  • Follow all safety guidelines and shop rules
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • 1 year of industry experience (Fitter 1)
  • Ability to read process sheets, cut lists, tolerances, and basic prints (Fitter 1)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use basic fixtures (Fitter 1)
  • Intermediate math skills (Fitter 1)
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on routine tasks (Fitter 1)
  • Works under direct supervision with structured responsibilities (Fitter 1)
  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience (Fitter 2)
  • Ability to fully fit beams, columns, and miscellaneous metals (Fitter 2)
  • Intermediate math including some geometry and trigonometry (Fitter 2)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documents (Fitter 2)
  • Ability to mentor and support Fitter 1s (Fitter 2)
  • Works under general supervision and uses independent judgment (Fitter 2)
  • Willingness to support continuous improvement (Fitter 2)
  • Minimum of 7 years of industry experience (Fitter 3)
  • Performs highly technical work with minimal supervision (Fitter 3)
  • Ability to fit complex components such as curved rails, stairs, and canopies (Fitter 3)
  • Ability to read and interpret advanced blueprints (Fitter 3)
  • Ability to conceptualize and design intermediate fixtures (Fitter 3)
  • Advanced mechanical aptitude and math skills (Fitter 3)
  • Supervisory experience overseeing up to 5 Fitters (Fitter 3)
  • Contributes to continuous improvement and lean practices (Fitter 3)
  • Work outside, inside, and in dusty, noisy and hazardous areas
  • Work in high places, tight places, confined spaces and/or other adverse locations
  • Climb, balance, squat, kneel and crouch
  • Lift, move, and/or carry up to 50 lbs
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures
