Requirements

Fully registered with GMC
MRCP (or equivalent)
On specialist register or within 6 months in one of the stroke parent specialities
Stroke experience (at equivalent level to Stroke CCST)
Ability to practice independently in Acute Medicine and Stroke and offer expert clinical opinion on a range of stroke and general medicine related problems
Excellent clinical skills
Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need
Awareness of the overall business environment in which the hospital operates
Understanding of the importance of good clinical coding
Knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks eg EWTD

Job Responsibility

Ensure Stroke Unit and TIA Provider status is maintained
Continue to develop the daily TIA service and maintain appropriate links and referral pathways with local GPs
Work with nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure the stroke unit has sufficient capacity to accommodate all suitable stroke patients on admission to the hospital
Work with the local Hyper Acute Stroke Centre to ensure robust protocols for the transfer of patients following hyperacute treatments and/or stabilisation
Assist the management team with the development of future Consultant and junior doctor roles
Share responsibility for providing evidence-based standards of care for all inpatients and outpatients
Have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the Patients Charter and the local purchasers contracts
Liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services and all healthcare agencies
Encourage and foster the governance process at clinical, managerial and medical levels and to take part in regional audit in support of evidence-based medicine
Participate fully in the management of the Stroke Departments and to liaise closely with the relevant General Manager and the Clinical Director

MBBS and MRCP (or equivalent)
Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of achieving CCT in Stroke Medicine or General/Internal Medicine
Broad clinical experience in stroke medicine and general medicine
Demonstrated subspecialty interest that complements existing departmental expertise
Ability to deliver consultant-level independent clinical care
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

Job Responsibility

Deliver consultant-led specialist stroke care across hyperacute, acute, rehabilitation, and outpatient pathways
Lead hyperacute ward rounds, thrombolysis assessment, and treatment delivery
Deliver and support rapid-access TIA clinics in accordance with national standards
Provide follow-up clinics and contribute to community-based stroke recovery pathways
Participate in the consultant on-call rota, including weekend hyperacute cover
Maintain high standards of clinical documentation, safety, and professional practice
Work collaboratively with stroke colleagues to support the development of integrated stroke services across acute, community, and rehabilitation pathways
Contribute to pathway redesign, service innovation, and performance improvement
Provide clinical leadership within multidisciplinary teams
Supervise junior medical staff and support medical student teaching

8 PAs Direct Clinical Care (DCC), including on-call commitments
2 PAs Supporting Professional Activity (SPA): 1.5 SPA covering CPD, revalidation, appraisal, job planning, teaching, and supervision
0.5 SPA supporting governance activities
Maintain up-to-date clinical practice and adopt evidence-based, cost-effective approaches
Participate in postgraduate and continuing medical education activities
Fulfil all administrative duties related to patient care, documentation, and departmental management
Participate in annual job plan review and appraisal processes
Maintain a portfolio suitable for GMC revalidation
