Job Description:

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced Stroke Consultant to join a progressive, highly regarded Stroke Service in the South West. This role offers the chance to work within a forward-thinking, research-active, and collaborative department that has been commended nationally for its rapid hyperacute stroke care and excellent patient outcomes. This position is ideally suited for an ambitious consultant seeking to deliver high-quality, evidence-based stroke care across the full pathway — from hyperacute management through to rehabilitation and follow-up — in a department committed to continuous improvement, innovation, and education.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide expert clinical leadership across the Hyperacute Stroke Unit, Acute Stroke Ward, and Rehabilitation Ward
  • Participate in 24/7 stroke on-call rota including thrombolysis and thrombectomy decision-making (currently 1:6, with potential to reduce to 1:7)
  • Lead and contribute to daily TIA clinics, front door assessments, and outpatient stroke follow-up
  • Collaborate closely with Advanced Clinical Practitioners, neuroradiology, and neurology colleagues to ensure rapid diagnosis and management of stroke patients
  • Engage actively in multidisciplinary meetings, including weekly neuroradiology MDTs, M&M reviews, and governance sessions
  • Supervise and mentor medical staff, physician associates, and allied health professionals
  • Contribute to research, audit, and service improvement initiatives in line with regional and national stroke care standards
  • Participate in the regional Integrated Stroke Delivery Network (ISDN) and associated education and workforce programmes

Requirements:

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • CCT in Stroke Medicine or within 6 months of completion in a parent specialty (e.g. Geriatrics, Neurology, Acute or Rehab Medicine)
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • Proven clinical competence in acute and hyperacute stroke management
  • Experience interpreting stroke imaging (CTA, CTP, MRI)
  • Strong leadership and communication skills within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching, clinical audit, and governance

Nice to have:

  • Higher Degree (MD/PhD or equivalent)
  • Experience in stroke research or quality improvement projects
  • Involvement in service transformation or workforce development initiatives
  • Formal management or teaching qualifications
