Job Description:

The R&D Manager will lead local end-to-end Product Development activities across 1440 Foods’ nutritional bars and powdered beverage portfolio. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the definition, prioritization, and execution of day-to-day activities enabling the effective execution of Innovation and Brand Maintenance initiatives. The incumbent will work closely with a diverse technical team to influence, plan, and deliver the Local R&D and Commercialization agenda.

Job Responsibility:

  • Lead local end-to-end Product Development activities across nutritional bars and powdered beverage portfolio
  • Plan and execute product development activities (innovation, cost-reduction, business continuity, efficiencies)
  • Lead R&D team through entire product development cycle from benchtop to commercial production
  • Ensure initiatives meet product development brief (technical requirements, cost, operational feasibility)
  • Drive data- and scientific-driven product development process
  • Lead team in addressing technical challenges (ingredient scouting, formulation, process scale-up)
  • Oversee planning and execution of benchtop, pilot, and full-scale plant production
  • Establish and execute best R&D practices (lab management, agile development, rapid prototyping)
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize tasks, allocate resources
  • Act as role model for effective teamwork, build relationships with internal and external partners
  • Lead and mentor R&D team, build inclusive team culture

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food/Chemical Engineering, or equivalent required
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in Food/Beverage Consumer Packaged Goods industry
  • At least 4 years of experience managing teams through the entire product development cycle
  • Experience in Dairy and/or Nutritional products preferred
  • Active knowledge and experience in planning and conducting sensory evaluations
  • Experience working with nutritional software, technical and quality systems
  • Experience with Excel, ESHA Genesis, project management software, and/or Trace Gains preferred
  • Strategic technical mindset

  • Develop, implement, and execute robust enquiry defence strategies for complex claims, focusing on technical and financial justifications in line with UK R&D legislation (CTA 2009/HMRC Guidelines)
  • Own and lead direct written and verbal correspondence and negotiations with HMRC caseworkers (ISBC/WMBC/Large Business Compliance Teams) to achieve timely and favourable closure notices
  • Review and quality-assure all documentation and supporting evidence (technical narratives, project costing, payroll, contracts) provided to HMRC to ensure it is clear, comprehensive, and addresses specific compliance risks
  • Manage and cultivate a flexible bank of external expert contractors (e.g., specialist engineers, sector-specific consultants, legal counsel) who can provide specialised technical evidence and support during enquiries
  • Define scopes of work, manage budgets, and oversee the output of all third-party experts to ensure their contribution aligns with the overall resolution strategy
  • Lead the internal feedback loop by analysing trends, common errors, HMRC concerns, and legislative risks identified during enquiries
  • Develop and deliver training sessions to the Claim Delivery and Sales teams, embedding new learnings and best practices back into our claims process and technology product
  • Proactively refine and update internal methodology and technical guidance to mitigate future enquiry risk and ensure all new claims are resilient and compliant
