Job Description:

We are looking for an experienced Manual Machinist / Toolmaker to join a well-established engineering business. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys precision work, problem-solving, and taking pride in high-quality tooling and components. You will be responsible for the manufacture, modification, repair, and maintenance of tools, jigs, fixtures, and precision components using manual machine tools.

Job Responsibility:

  • Operating manual lathes, mills, grinders, and drilling machines
  • Manufacturing tooling, jigs, fixtures, and bespoke components to tight tolerances
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
  • Setting up machines and selecting appropriate tooling and materials
  • Carrying out repairs, modifications, and improvements to existing tools
  • Using measuring equipment such as micrometers, verniers, and gauges
  • Working with a variety of materials including steels, alloys, and plastics
  • Maintaining high standards of workmanship, quality, and housekeeping
  • Supporting production and engineering teams with tooling solutions

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Manual Machinist and/or Toolmaker
  • Strong background in manual machining (essential)
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances
  • Confident reading technical drawings
  • Time-served apprenticeship or equivalent experience preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in quality
  • Able to work independently and manage workload effectively

Nice to have:

  • Experience in toolroom environments
  • Surface grinding experience
  • Knowledge of heat treatment or tool steels
  • Some CNC exposure (advantageous, not required)

  • Specify appropriate purchase components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates
