Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated and resilient Learning Mentor to provide intensive educational and pastoral support within a dedicated Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). This crucial role involves enabling pupil access to learning, assisting with complex behaviour management, and delivering specialised interventions under the guidance of teaching staff.

Job Responsibility:

  • Work with groups and individual pupils to overcome barriers to learning, including implementing Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and delivering therapy/programmes of work
  • Attend to children's personal needs, including pastoral, social, health, minor first aid, and welfare matters
  • Act as a role model and promote the inclusion of all pupils
  • Assist in the development and consistent implementation of tailored behaviour management strategies
  • Occasionally supervise whole classes or discreet groups for short periods
  • Undertake comprehensive pupil record keeping, data updating, and accurately recording achievement/progress to provide regular feedback to teaching staff
  • Comply with all safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Provide support in all curriculum areas, assisting in the whole planning cycle, preparing resources, and supporting the use of ICT in learning activities

Requirements:

  • Minimum of six months recent experience working within a UK school environment
  • Experience of working with children/young people with social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties (SEMH), or those with complex learning difficulties
  • Numeracy/literacy skills (at a level equivalent to NQF Level 2)
  • Completion of the Teaching Assistant Induction Programme
  • Willingness to consent to and apply for an enhanced disclosure to a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Services) check
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults and work effectively as part of a team
  • An understanding of the role of the Teaching Assistant and other professionals working in the classroom, the national/foundation stage curriculum, and basic child development and learning
  • Ability to use relevant technology (e.g., photocopier) and willingness to undertake first aid training as appropriate
  • Tact and diplomacy in all interpersonal relationships with the public, pupils, and colleagues
  • Self-motivation and personal drive to complete tasks to the required timescales
  • The flexibility to adapt to changing workload demands and new school challenges
  • Personal commitment to ensure support is equally accessible and appropriate to the diverse needs of the pupils
