Job Description:

Due to continued growth of the HPC project, we are seeking an additional Heavy Vehicle Technician to join us. Our fantastic Engineering Team is integral to the success of our business. Working at our 10 bay vehicle maintenance unit, you will be part of a team providing high quality inspection, maintenance, electrical, diagnostic and repair services for a current fleet of 190+ modern coaches, single and double deck buses ensuring safe and reliable vehicles are available at all times. Somerset Passenger Solutions provides the passenger transport needs for one of the largest construction projects in Europe – Hinkley Point C. We transport thousands of clients to and from the site every day, working 24/7 to ensure that construction remains on schedule.

Job Responsibility:

  • To be part of a team providing MOT preparation, vehicle inspection, maintenance, diagnostic and repair services to a varied PCV fleet
  • To maintain a clear understanding of vehicle inspection standards and compliance requirements
  • To follow all procedures to control and monitor parts usage and stock control
  • As part of the engineering team, to be consistently proactive in ensuring that PVR (peak vehicle requirement) is achieved

Requirements:

  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 or C&G equivalent or above in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance (PCV preferred)
  • Possession of a full driving licence
  • At least two years relevant, recent and demonstrable post training experience in heavy vehicle engineering, preferably PCV
  • The ability to apply consistently high standards of technical judgement
  • A pragmatic and proactive can-do attitude to short notice workshop deadlines
  • A flexible approach to working hours as we are a 24/7 business

Nice to have:

  • PCV Electrical system aptitude and experience in the bus industry
  • Category D licence holder
  • Possession of IRTEC licence
  • Inspection and/or Service Maintenance Technician
  • Good electrical and diagnostic ability
  • Knowledge of the transport sector

  • Take the lead on complex mechanical and electrical diagnostics across our PSV fleet
  • Diagnose and repair issues across engines, gearboxes, axles, body systems and high-voltage equipment
  • Work with advanced systems including CAN Line, After-Treatment Exhaust Systems, Multiplex networks, Euro5/Euro6 engines and hybrid technologies
  • Be the technical authority for fault investigations, root cause analysis and system performance
  • Act as custodian of all technical campaigns and fleet checks, ensuring our buses meet the highest safety and compliance standards
  • Provide expert advice to the Engineering Manager and liaise with OEM suppliers, chassis manufacturers and technical support teams
  • Support engineers across the depot and mentor apprentices where required
  • Carry out technical projects and trials on behalf of the wider Engineering leadership team
