Job Description:

The Habitat Steward contributes to the protection and management of key species and native habitats through habitat restoration and maintenance. The position performs a suite of duties including regular and heavy mowing and herbicide application directly related to maintaining habitats and ecological resources including grasslands, early successional habitats, fire-adapted habitats like barrens, exemplary natural community types and rare species habitats. This work is focused on priority habitats called Ecological Landscape Units that require ongoing stewardship to maintain.

Job Responsibility:

  • Focus on maintaining priority habitats (i.e., Ecological Landscape Units) that require routine maintenance or restoration including grasslands, early successional habitats and rare species habitats
  • Work collaboratively with staff from multiple teams to coordinate maintenance activities
  • Work with Program Directors and Ecologists to prioritize workload and lead implementation scheduling to achieve yearly goals, conduct regular and heavy mowing using a skid steer with mowing deck, herbicide application, and occasional other activities
  • Evaluate implementation of management with others on an ongoing basis to improve efficiency and outcomes
  • Transport and operate tractors, skid steer, UTVs, and power equipment including chainsaws, construction tools, seed drills, backpack sprayers and motorized tank sprayers following safety standards and best management practices
  • Serve as occasional project manager for selected habitat restoration and management projects that will be contracted out
  • Serve as a Trustees expert for invasive plant control including all aspects of chemical control
  • Maintain and advance organizational capacity and expertise to manage habitats by serving as a resource for stewardship staff including developing and leading trainings
  • Participate in prescribed fire as a member of The Trustees fire crew
  • Maintain tools and equipment
  • Assist the Inland Ecology Team with grant proposals for habitat management and restoration
  • Use GPS to document habitat management
  • Maintain necessary state licenses
  • Assist Director of Inland Ecology on an as needed basis with a variety of initiatives and projects.

Requirements:

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Practical knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Massachusetts Commercial Pesticide Applicator (CORE) License or willingness to obtain
  • Massachusetts Hoisting License (2A) and DOT medical card or willingness to obtain
  • Experience with operating and transporting heavy equipment (e.g., tractors, skid steer)
  • The desire to take initiative and solve problems
  • Effective communication skills
  • The ability to work outdoors daily, and at times, under rigorous conditions and perform physically strenuous duties including traversing steep slopes with a backpack sprayer
  • The ability to lift /carry 50 pounds
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
  • A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record
  • A satisfactory criminal background (CORI) check.
