Group Commercial Director – UK Utilities. Our client, a leading and rapidly expanding group within the UK utilities contracting space, is seeking a dynamic and results-oriented Group Commercial Director to join their senior leadership team. This pivotal role will be instrumental in shaping our clients commercial strategy, securing high-value contracts, and accelerating our market penetration across key utility infrastructure projects.

Job Responsibility:

  • Reporting directly to the Group CEO, the Group Commercial Director will hold overarching responsibility for the commercial performance of the entire group
  • Strategic Commercial Leadership: Developing and implementing a comprehensive commercial strategy aligned with the group’s ambitious growth objectives, identifying new market opportunities, and leading on bids and tenders for significant utility infrastructure projects (e.g., water, gas, electricity, telecoms)
  • Commercial Oversight & Performance: Overseeing all commercial activities, ensuring robust contract negotiation, risk management, and the profitable delivery of projects across all operating companies within the group
  • Business Development & Client Relationships: Cultivating and expanding high-level relationships with key utility clients, consultants, and stakeholders, fostering long-term partnerships and securing new business
  • Team Leadership & Development: Leading, mentoring, and developing a high-performing commercial team across the group, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Market Intelligence & Innovation: Staying abreast of market trends, regulatory changes, and competitive landscapes within the UK utilities sector to identify strategic advantages and innovative commercial approaches
  • P&L Responsibility: Driving revenue growth and profitability through effective commercial management and strategic decision-making

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in a senior commercial leadership role within the UK utilities contracting sector
  • A deep understanding of contracting models, frameworks, and commercial intricacies within this specific market is essential
  • A demonstrable track record of successfully securing and delivering multi-million-pound utility infrastructure projects
  • Strong commercial acumen and negotiation skills, with the ability to structure complex deals and mitigate commercial risks
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, capable of influencing at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Proven leadership capabilities, with experience building, managing, and motivating high-performing commercial teams
  • A strategic mindset, coupled with the ability to translate strategic vision into tangible commercial outcomes
