Job Description:

32 hours/wk position working in GI and Pain. Position will involve approximately 60% GI procedures (upper/lower endo and colonoscopies, scope cleaning) and 40% pain procedures (local injections, RFA procedures, neuro stimulator implants). 8-hour shifts, Monday-Friday, typically 0700-1530 but can vary at times based on schedule. Will require nightly call (once per week), weekend call (every 6th weekend (Fri-Mon) and holiday call (2 holidays per year). *Call requirement means that you must be able to receive the phone call and be onsite in 30 minutes.

Job Responsibility:

Performs and/or assists in surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including epidural steroid injections, neuro stimulator electrode implants, trigger point injections, lumbar sympathetic blocks, regional IV administrations, epidural catheter insertions, radio frequency ablations (RFA's), nerve injections with neurolysis, discographies, vertebralplasties and kyphoplasties
Performs point of care testing and records results
Monitors patient's vital signs before, during, and after procedures
Organizes and prepares procedure room ensuring proper sterilization of instruments and equipment
Provides basic instructions and answers patient's questions prior to procedures
Refers complex questions to RN's or physicians
Maintains working knowledge of all procedural equipment in the department and conducts routine maintenance
Processes patient prescription requests communicating patient needs to the physician
Prepares equipment for sterile processing by cleaning and wrapping instruments
Orders, receives and stocks pain management department supplies and maintains adequate inventory
Assists clerical staff with office procedures including scheduling of appointments, greeting of patients, entry of patient charges and calling to remind patients of appointments
Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served
Assists with patient care activities and related services under the supervision/delegation of the registered nurse and/or physician including intraprocedural support
Assists physicians with accurate retrieval of specimens, specimen preservation, labeling and transportation of specimens to lab
Assists in initiating and/or collaborating with the team for all safety initiatives
Organizes and prepares procedure rooms and equipment according to each physician's specification
Performs high level disinfection and reprocessing of equipment/scopes
Cleans, calibrates, operates and performs preventative maintenance on equipment
Reports and documents equipment repairs
Documents procedures, images, videos and patient charges utilizing the endoscope and ultrasound information systems
Assists in maintaining inventory for unit
Performs various clerical duties which includes answering of phones, filing, data entry, scheduling and compilation of patient records

Requirements:

GI Technical Specialist (GTS) certification issued by SGNA by completing the SGNA Associates Program needs to be obtained within 6 months
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
High School Graduate
Typically requires 1 year of experience in a nursing assistant, medical assistant or similar patient care position
Typically requires 2 years of experience in patient care that includes experiences in administering injections, IV insertions and knowledge of prescription medications and dosage instructions
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Must be able to work independently
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
Basic computer skills
Excellent organizational skills
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist frequently during work shift
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. over the head
Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance
Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force
Must be able to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present
Must wear lead aprons with the weight resting on shoulders
Must have speech, hearing, & sight for communication during procedures
Must have touch and fine motor skill coordination
Must be able to function in a very limited space
