The Department of Transportation, Northwest Region is recruiting for an Environmental Intern (environmental analysis & Review Specialist) for Summer 2026! This internship will be a 2 year internship program (going through May 2028). This internship will be headquartered at and required to work from the regional office located in Eau Claire, WI. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview. Job Responsibility:

  • Work with wetland mitigation and aid in environmental office duties
  • Work with all phases of this process, identifying existing wetlands, determining wetland losses, the creation/restoration of new wetlands, and the reporting of wetland losses from new sites
  • Tracking various environmental aspects and commitments in a spreadsheet/database
  • Identifying wetland communities and delineating boundaries between wetlands and uplands
  • Identifying a great variety of grasses, sedges, plants, shrubs, and trees of both wetland and upland habitats
  • Monitoring ground and surface water levels
  • Identifying wetland soil characteristics
  • Compiling the information obtained in the field
  • Compiling information from other sources (like consultants)
  • Communicating information about losses and how those losses are mitigated to regulatory agencies, the DNR and Army Corps of Engineers
  • Maintaining detailed accurate records to comply with the mitigation requirements
  • Record/file management
  • Tracking various environmental aspects

Requirements:

  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) or a similar software
  • Experience doing fieldwork
  • Experience working as a member of a team
  • Experience providing administrative support (such as emailing, researching, document management, etc.)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without agency sponsorship)
  • At least 18 years of age at the time the internship program begins (May 2026)
  • Currently enrolled in a 2-year, 4-year, or graduate school
