An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Credit Controller to join a well-established organisation in Colchester. This Credit Controller role sits within a supportive finance function and offers genuine ownership of the credit and collections process. As a Credit Controller, you will take responsibility for managing the debtor ledger and driving timely payments, while building strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. The Credit Controller will be part of a close-knit accounts team and will report directly into the Finance Controller. Please note, this Credit Controller role may be subject to relevant security clearance checks.
Job Responsibility:
Manage and monitor the debtor ledger end to end
Proactively chase outstanding payments via phone, email, and written communication
Communicate professionally with clients to secure payment and resolve queries
Maintain accurate records of all debtor communications
Produce and distribute aged debt reports to management
Assist with month-end reporting and accounts receivable reconciliations
Work closely with internal teams to ensure client accounts are accurate
Support fee-earning staff to achieve prompt payment
Meet regularly with client leads to review outstanding balances
Meet with senior stakeholders to analyse overall debt position
Produce Letters Before Action for unpaid invoices where required
Recommend accounts for escalation or legal action
Prepare Court Claim forms where necessary
Support wider finance duties as required
Manage workload effectively and independently
Requirements:
Proven experience in a Credit Controller or similar role
Experience using Sage 200
Strong MS Office skills, particularly Excel
Experience producing aged debt reports
Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
Confident communicator with strong problem-solving skills
Understanding of financial regulations and data protection
Team-focused, motivated, and keen to continue learning
