This is an opportunity to join an Adult Community Mental Health Team serving adults aged 18–65 with severe and enduring mental illness. The service is undergoing a significant redesign, offering consultants the chance to actively shape future community mental health provision while maintaining high clinical standards. The role provides an excellent work–life balance within a small-island healthcare system, supported by strong multidisciplinary working, modern facilities, and dedicated administrative support. The consultant will play a key clinical leadership role within the community mental health service and contribute to service development, teaching, and governance.
Job Responsibility:
Provide senior medical leadership within the Adult Community Mental Health Team
Take responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of adults with severe mental illness in a community setting
Act as a Responsible Clinician for patients subject to Mental Health legislation in the community
Provide supervision and clinical oversight to Staff Grade doctors and junior medical colleagues
Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including psychologists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and support staff
Contribute to Care and Recovery planning for patients under care coordination
Liaise with primary care, acute services, and other specialities as required
Participate in the psychiatry on-call rota and Mental Health Law assessments
Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation and communication with GPs
Actively participate in clinical governance, audit, service development, and quality improvement initiatives
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and in-house training programmes
Maintain CPD requirements in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidance
Requirements:
Primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent)
Complete GMC registration with a licence to practise
Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Adult Psychiatry
CCT in Adult Psychiatry (or within 6 months of award at interview) or equivalent
Eligibility for Section 12 approval
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Experience assessing and treating adults with severe mental illness in community psychiatric settings
Experience working within NHS mental health services
Experience managing complex psychopharmacology, including depot medication and clozapine
Understanding of clinical governance, audit, and CPD processes
Strong clinical leadership and decision-making skills
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage complex caseloads independently

MRCPsych or equivalent
Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc or equivalent)

Experience contributing to service redesign or transformation
Teaching and educational supervision experience
